Guide to Backlinks for SEO, How to Make them Where to Place them

What are Backlinks

Okay, If you are a seasoned pro at Search Engine Optimization (SEO) then this article will be of little value to you. However, if you are just now taking your baby steps on generating revenue from online methods then this article will be crucial to your understanding of the value of quality backlinks.

If you're just starting out, you will see terms like: backlink, backlinks, quality backlinks, high PR backlinks. And you'll be thinking, "what the heck is a backlink?" Simply put, you can thnk of a backlink as a directional pointer to your web site or article, or whatever you are promoting.

Some backlinks carry more weight than others and then some carry no weight at all. It all depends on where you place the link and the type of link you are placing. Some links will generate targeted traffic. Targeted traffic comes from people that search for your keywords on the search engines and find your link embedded in an article, blog , or forum post.

Some links carry what the SEO guru's call Google Juice. Links with Google Juice are those that are placed in publicly viewable profiles on High PR (Page Rank) sites. For example, Hubpages has a Page Rank (PR) of 6 and allows us to create a profile and place backlinks inside the text. When the search engines do what they do, they send a spider that crawls the profile and notes the backlink and credits it to the targeted site as being worthy of a PR6 site, therefore giving it Google Juice.

Then there are those links that carry no weight at all with the search engines but that does not mean they are worthless. Links that carry no search engine weight are those that are tagged "nofollow." The "nofollow" tag simply tells the search engine spiders that, yes there is a link to another site here but the current site is not endorsing the targeted site. That's not to say that sites that have the "dofollow" tag endorse the targeted sites, they only endorse the member that is posting the backlink.

These "nofollow" backlinks can have value if you are an active member or contributing member of a site and build community relationships with other members. If your fellow members become friends or fans then they can likely send traffic to your profile which will have the link pointing to whatever you are promoting.

Do you get it now?

Don't get discouraged, everyone was new once.
Don't get discouraged, everyone was new once.

Where to get Backlinks

Getting backlinks is not that hard, it is time consuming which makes it a challenge for people with limited time. If you read my hub on the Easiest ways to get backlinks, you would know that it only takes time. You're results are reflected by your effort

A freebie for you

Okay, I must be crazy but I'm going to give you a small list of places where you can place a backlink. This list is a list that I created. Similar lists are selling on sites like the Warrior Forum at $20 a pop. These are self discovered sites and I have backlinks on them myself.

When you go to each of these sites, you will have to resgister as a member and confirm your membership through an email responder. Once you are confirmed, you will be allowed to create a membership profile. Inside the profile, you can place an anchor text that points to whatever you are promoting. If you are unfamilliar with what an anchor text is, look above at the blue colored links. Those are anchor texts that I have pointing at mine and Sunstreeks hubs.

Here's the list:

  1. forum.upi.edu/v3 this is a PR5 site
  2. freemusicarchive.org this is a PR6 site
  3. imeem.com this is a PR7 site
  4. multply.com this is a PR7 site
  5. 2collab.com this is a PR8 site
  6. propeller.com this is a PR8 site
  7. digg.com this is a PR8 site
  8. slashdot.org this is a PR9 site

Here is a tip, when you get to these sites, they usually have a page entitled "links." Go to that page and follow the links and sometimes you will find a similar site that will allow you to become a member and make a profile.

If you're not already a member here at hubpages the JOIN HERE and get a link on a PR6 site from within your new profile.

How to make a link

I understand that many of you reading this are very green and need all the information you can get so here is all the information I have... ;)

Most sites have their own way of doing things but similar sites have similar qualities. Blogs and article directories and many of the sites I listed above require HTML for placing links.Forums mostly require BB code and Wiki's require something entirely different. But all of them generally allow anchored text when it comes to backlinks.

Here is how to make the links:

HTML Set Up:

<a href="http://www.YOURSITE.com">ANCHOR TEXT</a>

BBCode Set Up:

[url=http:/www.YOURSITE.com]ANCHOR TEXT[/url]

Textile Set Up:

"ANCHOR TEXT":http://www.YOURSITE.com

Wiki Markup Set Up:

[url:ANCHOR TEXT|http:/www.YOURSITE.com]

Wiki 2 Set Up:

[http://www.YOURSITE.com|ANCHOR TEXT]

Regular Wiki Set Up:

[http://www.YOURSITE.com ANCHOR TEXT]

livewithrichard profile image

You are very welcome TamCor. Of course the best kind of links come from high PR sites that share a common theme with your site or article. Those types of links are sort of like endorsements of your content. As I said above, the links you get in your profiles on high PR sites are like endorsements of the member. For even more information, read the hubs I have linked to above.

CelinaMac profile image

CelinaMac 2 years ago

Thank you! Do you have any advice about forum posting for promotion?

livewithrichard profile image

livewithrichard Hub Author 2 years ago

Thank you Celina. Yes, when you go to forums you need to put your links inside your signature. You want to comment and participate by leaving relevant feedback to the posters. You will get a lot of backlash if you join a forum for the sole purpose of self promotion. Self promotion is okay, but only from your sig.

Depends too on the forum. Some forums like digitalpoint will not even allow you to create a sig until you have made a minimum of 10 posts. Even then you still need another 15 posts before you can start your own thread.

Use the search function on the forums to find a topic that interests you. Then get involved in the conversation. But before you waste your time on a forum or anywhere you want to leave a backlink, make sure they are dofollow sites.

View the page source and then find where someone else left a link and see if there is a ref=nofollow tag, if there is, don't waste your time and move on to your next target...lol

Hope this helps.

Thanks Camping Dan. I too am a member of digitalpoint and agree I get a lot of traffic from there. I might add that it's important to consider the type of traffic you get from forums depends on the type of forum you are in.

Don simkovich 2 years ago

I didn't realize forums would be useful. Also, I've heard some experts play down Stumbleupon saying the traffic really isn't useful from it. What are your thoughts?

This is a very good Hub by the way. I did do a successful "SEO" proj for a client earlier in the year by writing articles.

livewithrichard profile image

livewithrichard Hub Author 2 years ago

Stumbleupon, as well as all the social networks will only give you a small bit of traffic for a short period of time. And it's not advisable to submit your own articles. The anchor text link that you place in your profile will, as UK SEO pointed out above, sort of piggy back on the sites authority.

Many SEO experts agree that placing anchor text backlinks on high PR sites will gain you the Google Juice you need to soar in the SERP's. I know this to be true because I use this method in promoting my own websites. Many of these High PR sites allow you to create a profile and give you access to your own blog. So, you can place links in your profile, and if you have relevant material to blog about, you can place even more links inside the blog.

Before you go signing up at these sites, its good to see if they are nofollow or dofollow because nofollow sites will limit you to only traffic where dofollow sites will give you Google Juice.

Nice Hub. I heard that Google is starting to downgrade forum links because they are self posted and they only want to count links that other people put on for a site. livewithrichard profile image

livewithrichard Hub Author 2 years ago

@Archetype thanks for the comment glad I could help.

@Alway thank you too for the comment and no I haven't heard about Google downgrading forum links. However, it's not the links you place in forum posts that we are after, sure those are good too especially for traffic but we are more concerned with getting our anchor text backlinks placed insied our profiles on those High PR sites. They may not all show up on backlink checkers but they are there and they do work, it works for my sites.

Hi Barb, thanks for the comment. Yes you can get a good backlink through your profile at ezinearticles.com however it will be a url link and not an anchor text link. Most people don't know how to write a useful comment so they just get deleted. And it's dumb to post links in places that you are not welcome. If you look at the people selling link lists that's how they are making their money. But because the lists get saturated with unintelligent comments the site owners just shut them off. Your article is good, but people would get a lot more out of placing links on sites where they are welcome.

livewithrichard profile image

livewithrichard Hub Author 2 years ago

Mike, I agree to a point. The links I'm suggesting you make are anchor links that are placed inside your profile at these sites. The profiles are publicly viewable and they do not interfere with any dialogue that may be taking place on those sites. These sites welcome new users because it builds up their stats. Ideally, they would like these new users to participate in the dialogue and if you do participate, make sure you follow the sites TOS.

Excellent introduction Richard and a good list of resources too.

One other way to get targeted backlinks for free which will send some useful traffic along is through twitter - not by adding your link to your profile page which is what most people already know - but by targeted a blog post or site content and linking back to it through a tweet using the same keywords in the tweet - if you use a longtail keyword which nobody else is using this will really help to propel your site in google search - I've used it for a hub I have which went from around 15 to 75 daily visits with this method in less than a week.

hope it helps..

Great Hub! Very informative. But I have to disagree with you on one point. Nofollow links do carry some leverage if they are coming from VERY HIGH PR Sites such as the Wiki. That just from my experience. Has anyone had the same effect?

But overall, love your hub! :)

livewithrichard profile image

livewithrichard Hub Author 2 years ago

S.E. nofollow links have no weight with the search engines, the nofollow designation tells the search engines to skip over it and go on to the nest piece in the source code.

Nofollow links are still clickable so, yes on high traffic sites they do carry value in that visitors will click on them and follow through to your site. But as far as having PR value for search engines, they have none.

livewithrichard profile image

Emievil, the really cool thing about hubs is that if you produce quality articles your readers will build the backlinks for you. They will share them with their friends and link to them on their blogs. Focus on quality first and backlinking as a secondary (but important) need.

Good tips. I might ad that you need RELEVANT links. i.e., if you have a farming website then a link from a music site is going to be heavily discounted by Google while a link from another farming site or a related site like a link from the FDA would give you good "juice".

livewithrichard profile image

livewithrichard Hub Author 2 years ago

You only have to worry about duplicate content if you are earning adsense from one of your articles. Here on HP your articles should be unique, but you can spin or create whole new articles on the same topic and upload them to as many directories as you can find to get a backlink from your resource box. The higher PR directories will not publish duplicate content but there are thousands of diretories that will.

Thanks for sharing livewithrichard.

livewithrichard profile image

livewithrichard Hub Author 2 years ago

Viryabo, all backlinks count. They count even more whent they are placed on dofollow sites. Shetoldme and yousaytoo are dofollow. Even it they are on nofollow sites, the links are still active, the nofollow just tells the search engine spider not to follow, the users of those sites can still click through and generate traffic for you.

Adam, I don't know anything about traffic bug. I wouldn't put much faith into any system that will supposedly bring you tons of traffic. The only true way to get traffic is to go out and bring it yourself. A well planned backlinking strategy is a sure way to get what you need. Use this guide and my other hubs on getting traffic and using RSS feeds to get you as much traffic as your efforts will allow. THERE IS NO EASY BUTTON AND NO QUICK FIX YOU HAVE TO DO THE WORK TO SEE THE RESULTS AND THOSE THAT DO NOT DO THE WORK DO NOT SEE THE RESULTS.

livewithrichard profile image

livewithrichard Hub Author 2 years ago

It all depends on your level of competition Hoe. If you do any search on Google and use SEObook for firefox you will see that the sites at the top of the SERPs have quantity on their side. As far as Bing is concerned, nobody knows exactly what they are looking for as they are very vague about their own methods of computation.

livewithrichard profile image

livewithrichard Hub Author 2 years ago

SEO Nepal, I gave you some sites to use for backliks above and if you want more then check out my offer at the end of the article. Yes, the sites I listed have high PR on their main page and many of their subpages and when you place links inside the profiles of these pages they get the benefit of first filtering through that sites high PR.

Look at it this way, the branches on a very tall tree will hang low but they are much higher than the branches on a baby tree. Anyone that has links in their profile here on HP can tell you they are getting some good Google juice from those links even though most of the profiles here have ZERO PR. They are DOFOLLOW and the main site is a PR 6 which we all benefit from.

Hi Richard,

Thought I'd drop by to give you a quick update (yes, I bought your bargain basement list of 120 sites and here's a genuine testimonial!)..

I've been applying the steps in the e-book for 2 weeks on 1 site for a client of mine (I'm putting together a social media campaign for her)..

Now, either Google has made an error in PR (do Google make errors?) or..

This brand new site has gone from 0 to PR3 in 2 weeks..

Impressed to say the least..

and by the way, I've only added the first 20 sites - another 100 to go!

Wow Neil those are some impressive moves. You're doing it exactly the way you're supposed to by taking it slow it looks like a natural progression of backlinking.

Thanks for sharing and keep us posted.

Neil Ashworth profile image

No problem Richard. I should and am thanking you for the advice and information, which is spot on. I must admit the excitement of seeing the PR at 3 so soon did tempt me to start adding more links as fast as I could but as we know now that's just not the answer.

There are a couple of sites on the list that seem to have blocked the ability to edit your profile so I'll collate and drop you I line when I'm done if that helps you to review.

I'm also in the process of putting together a few new hubs on social networking and the one on bookmarking has a great list to take home, so feel free to add to yours when it goes live in the next week or so if you wish.

Great hub! Starting to understand a little more. I'm new to hubpages and trying to figure out linking has been a real pain for me. I just do not understand how to do this. I'm still trying to figure out how to do anchor text links for my hubs. At least I know the difference between a back link and an anchor text link, lol. I just don't know how to apply either yet. The signature link is a big interest also. Your info was very helpful to me in trying to understand all of this linking business. Thank you!

I am seriously considering paying the $15 for 100 good backlinks. I'm 99% sure you will hear back from me on that in the next day or two. Thanx. Are links from the free list above included for the $15? slashdot, digg, propeller, etc.?

livewithrichard profile image

livewithrichard Hub Author 2 years ago

The links above are a sample of what the links are like in the package I'm selling. All are High PR 5 - 9 sites and you will place your anchor text backlinks in your profile to the sites. You will then get excellent link juice just like you are getting from the profile here on HP.

harrist profile image

thanks! Richard post another free dofollow pr 9 I'll be your Big Fans lol :-)

livewithrichard profile image

livewithrichard Hub Author 2 years ago

Jalpari, they told you right. Google will not give you any more juice with multiple links coming from the same domain. It will choose the most relevant link and disregard any others so don't waste your time posting multiple links from a single domain. That includes posting links all over hubpages. Your best bet is to find high pr sites where you can become a member and create a profile that allows dofollow links like those I give you above.

Hello, Richard, at long last I got to the end but I am not complaining because on the way I learned more and got more information. Now my problem is that I just about got myself sorted out with backlinks. Now, you are talking about anker links. How do I do them? Also, how to I know which are dofollow and which are nofollow? Thank you for giving such great information and at easy written language. You are super.

livewithrichard profile image

livewithrichard Hub Author 2 years ago

Thanks for the comment Hello. Use the HTML set up I have above to make your anchor text links. The "anchor" is the text of your keyword and the HTML set up above will tie your keyword text to the URL that you want to promote.

A quick and easy way to make sure you are placing your anchor text links on sites that are not nofollow, just right click your mouse and 'view source' then when the page source comes up, click on the 'edit' then 'find' then type in your keyword. The source will then be highligted. If you do not see this: 'rel=nofollow' before or after your anchor link then the page is a dofollow and you are good to go. Even if it is a nofollow, there is no reason to remove it because somebody may stumble across it and click on the link.

You have got the patient of a saint. Thank you for your help. I will try it. By the way, I have been over to 411 and read and try to get the picture. One question - when I posted my link and a publisher wants it, will he pay or contact me? Is that the idea? Thank you again for all your help.

livewithrichard profile image

livewithrichard Hub Author 2 years ago

That would be nice Hello but when you post articles to a general article directory you are posting them for free for anyone to use. The main purpose of publishing articles on article directories is to build backlinks to your content. You get a backlink from every publisher that uses your content. Sometimes it can be a great deal and then sometimes the only backlink you get is from the directory itself.

Hello, hello, profile image

Hello, hello, 2 years ago

Sorry, Richard, but one more thing I am not clear. You are talking about putting in the keyword. Now which is that? I know it is dumm to you and I heard you scream, which is understandable. Thank you for your help.

livewithrichard profile image

livewithrichard Hub Author 2 years ago

There are no dumb questions Hello when you're trying to learn something new. Check out my hub: http://hubpages.com/hub/Long-Tail-Keyword-Tutorial and you will get a good idea of how to locate keywords. When you want to write for Google adsense revenue, its important to first find high paying keywords then form an article around that. It's much different than finding a topic to write about and then finding keywords to fit. Believe me, for creative writers, there is not much of a difference except the level of revenue that can be earned.

Hello, hello, profile image

Hello, hello, 2 years ago

Hello, hello, profile image

Hello, hello, 2 years ago

Hello, Richard, it is me again. I read your hub about the keyword and got further on that subject. Now I still have problems with when you wrote about the anker text and explained it, a bit above, you stated to type in keyword. Now is that the keyword of my hub and will I type in anyof the keyword or the heading of the hub? Sorry, I hope you have enough headache tablets.

livewithrichard profile image

livewithrichard Hub Author 2 years ago

Hello, the anchor text is the keyword or keyword phrase you want to use. Think about your Sean Flynn hub. If people went to Google search to find out more about him they would probably type in "Sean Flynn" so in order for your hub to get to the top of the SERPs you will want to use the keywords "Sean Flynn" as your anchor text. Anchor just means that the link you build will tie the link to the keywords instead of just the URL. The anchor text makes it easier than linking a broad or long URL.

Thanks for the list But most of the web 2.0 social media sites like Digg offers a nofollow anchor link, which is no use for us in terms of PR. Digg passes link juice only if the submission hits the front page or either it is listed as a favorite.

Thanks for this list - I found it really helpful. Getting good quality links is a real part of the challenge when it comes to off-page SEO. One of things I've been helping people with is giving them an SEO Report that tells them how many backlinks (and subsequently what Google PR) they need on each keyword to rank high.

livewithrichard profile image

livewithrichard Hub Author 22 months ago

Eddy, if you want to target a specific keyword then link to your hub. If ALL of your hubs are on the same topic then link to your profile. The more backlinks your individual hubs have the better they will rank in the SERPs. Hubpages authority will help you rank better with higher competition keywords.

Very nice hub Richard, thanks for sharing:) Backlinks are definitely a must have in order to rise in the search engines. All relevant links are good, even many nofollow links. We all must remember that although Google counts Dofollow links only - they are not the ONLY search engine in the world. Let's all remember there are countless others that do give nofollow links weight for determining PR. And let's also not forget all the traffic that you can get from targeted visitors following your link whether it's DoFollow or not.

Thanks for the profile links ;) One thing though, Google Pagerank is a measure of the value of a page, not of an entire site, therefore I don't understand why the PR of a site your a making a profile on is relevant (beyond a little trustrank and domain authority) due to the fact that if it is indexed it will almost certainly be a PR0.

Just to add a clarification, the hub says that hubpages has a Google PR 6 ranking. That is true of the homepage located at http://hubpages.com but is not true of the thousands of other pages associated with the website. Google ranks pages not websites so each individual page on HubPages has its own pagerank. If you use a tool such as SeoQuake you will see that most of the pages have PR 0. This page has PR 3 so it looks like you must have been busy getting backlinks to the page :-) Cheers

livewithrichard profile image

livewithrichard Hub Author 13 months ago

Good clarification Sarah. Though it is true that you will benefit from links on domains with high PR you will do better on pages with high PR.

And actually, on this page I did no backlinking at all, I provided content that people are searching for and they did the backlinking for me. This is the best way to get backlinks.

I would slightly disagree with the fact no follow has no purpose at all, as to my knowledge yahoo and bing still take into consideration no follow links also a web site with 100% do follow links might look slightly unnatural.
