Guide to Backlinks for SEO, How to Make them Where to Place them
92What are Backlinks
Okay, If you are a seasoned pro at Search Engine Optimization (SEO) then this article will be of little value to you. However, if you are just now taking your baby steps on generating revenue from online methods then this article will be crucial to your understanding of the value of quality backlinks.
If you're just starting out, you will see terms like: backlink, backlinks, quality backlinks, high PR backlinks. And you'll be thinking, "what the heck is a backlink?" Simply put, you can thnk of a backlink as a directional pointer to your web site or article, or whatever you are promoting.
Some backlinks carry more weight than others and then some carry no weight at all. It all depends on where you place the link and the type of link you are placing. Some links will generate targeted traffic. Targeted traffic comes from people that search for your keywords on the search engines and find your link embedded in an article, blog , or forum post.
Some links carry what the SEO guru's call Google Juice. Links with Google Juice are those that are placed in publicly viewable profiles on High PR (Page Rank) sites. For example, Hubpages has a Page Rank (PR) of 6 and allows us to create a profile and place backlinks inside the text. When the search engines do what they do, they send a spider that crawls the profile and notes the backlink and credits it to the targeted site as being worthy of a PR6 site, therefore giving it Google Juice.
Then there are those links that carry no weight at all with the search engines but that does not mean they are worthless. Links that carry no search engine weight are those that are tagged "nofollow." The "nofollow" tag simply tells the search engine spiders that, yes there is a link to another site here but the current site is not endorsing the targeted site. That's not to say that sites that have the "dofollow" tag endorse the targeted sites, they only endorse the member that is posting the backlink.
These "nofollow" backlinks can have value if you are an active member or contributing member of a site and build community relationships with other members. If your fellow members become friends or fans then they can likely send traffic to your profile which will have the link pointing to whatever you are promoting.
Do you get it now?
Where to get Backlinks
Getting backlinks is not that hard, it is time consuming which makes it a challenge for people with limited time. If you read my hub on the Easiest ways to get backlinks, you would know that it only takes time. You're results are reflected by your effort
A freebie for you
Okay, I must be crazy but I'm going to give you a small list of places where you can place a backlink. This list is a list that I created. Similar lists are selling on sites like the Warrior Forum at $20 a pop. These are self discovered sites and I have backlinks on them myself.
When you go to each of these sites, you will have to resgister as a member and confirm your membership through an email responder. Once you are confirmed, you will be allowed to create a membership profile. Inside the profile, you can place an anchor text that points to whatever you are promoting. If you are unfamilliar with what an anchor text is, look above at the blue colored links. Those are anchor texts that I have pointing at mine and Sunstreeks hubs.
Here's the list:
- forum.upi.edu/v3 this is a PR5 site
- freemusicarchive.org this is a PR6 site
- imeem.com this is a PR7 site
- multply.com this is a PR7 site
- 2collab.com this is a PR8 site
- propeller.com this is a PR8 site
- digg.com this is a PR8 site
- slashdot.org this is a PR9 site
Here is a tip, when you get to these sites, they usually have a page entitled "links." Go to that page and follow the links and sometimes you will find a similar site that will allow you to become a member and make a profile.
If you're not already a member here at hubpages the JOIN HERE and get a link on a PR6 site from within your new profile.

How to make a link
I understand that many of you reading this are very green and need all the information you can get so here is all the information I have... ;)
Most sites have their own way of doing things but similar sites have similar qualities. Blogs and article directories and many of the sites I listed above require HTML for placing links.Forums mostly require BB code and Wiki's require something entirely different. But all of them generally allow anchored text when it comes to backlinks.
Here is how to make the links:
HTML Set Up:
<a href="http://www.YOURSITE.com">ANCHOR TEXT</a>
BBCode Set Up:
[url=http:/www.YOURSITE.com]ANCHOR TEXT[/url]
Textile Set Up:
"ANCHOR TEXT":http://www.YOURSITE.com
Wiki Markup Set Up:
[url:ANCHOR TEXT|http:/www.YOURSITE.com]
Wiki 2 Set Up:
[http://www.YOURSITE.com|ANCHOR TEXT]
Regular Wiki Set Up:
[http://www.YOURSITE.com ANCHOR TEXT]

Excellent list Richard - many thanks ! Now I just got to get my act together and check them all out.
Thanks for sharing your list of sites for backlinks. Think I'll read your other Hubs...I'm sure I'll pick up even more new link stuff.
Thanks so much--My husband and I are struggling with all the info, trying to understand what it takes to work online...this will help alot! :)
Great hub! Thanks so much for sharing your backlink list. I appreciate all the help I can get.
Thank you! Do you have any advice about forum posting for promotion?
I found your collection very useful, and the type of links you have provided will really help me in forums where I will be back linking
Thanks so much, LWR. Great info and very, very helpful.
Thank you for some very valuable information.
Nice article! I particularly appreciate the list of sites for backlinking.
I noticed that the links in your story open up in a new window. I'm new to HubPages, but the links I add to my articles won't do that. Any tip on how it's done?! Thanks!
Again, great article. This is when I need someone like you living next door to come over and sit down with me so I can "get it". I've bookmarked this article too! Well done!
Good starter list of sites. There were a few there that I wasn't aware of.
LiveJournal offers the opportunity to use anchor text, and is used by some authoritative sites for its comment platform.
Great Stuff
Excellent
The list of sites was really great
Nice job. Thank you for the freebies.
Finally I learn something new about back links - and useful as well! Thanks!
Thank you so much. I am greener than the grass between my toes! This info was so helpful. Hope your a Cubs Fan! Only way to go!
Thank you for providing this information. RKHenry sent me over here, and I'm glad he did so. Thanks a bunch.
I have great luck with forums. Finding .edu forums as well as those such as digitalpoint and sitepoint bring in good quality links that seem to help my site.
I didn't realize forums would be useful. Also, I've heard some experts play down Stumbleupon saying the traffic really isn't useful from it. What are your thoughts?
This is a very good Hub by the way. I did do a successful "SEO" proj for a client earlier in the year by writing articles.
Thanks for the great info. As a newbie to all this, I appreciate a hub that cuts through to the meat of the issue. This should be a big help to me. Keep up the good work!
good information about seo.Learning now...
Thank you so much..I'm still struggling but then, your hub is so simple and easy to understand. Thanks!:)
Thanks a lot for ALL that good information! This should for sure help me out, or for that matter anyone. Again thanks, and God bless!
Thanks, appreciate all the info I can get although it can be overwhelming.
This is great, I have been looking for a place that could give me a list of good PR 6 and higher sites, thanks soooo much!
Nice Hub. I heard that Google is starting to downgrade forum links because they are self posted and they only want to count links that other people put on for a site. Have you heard anything about that? I'd hate to be wasting a bunch of time getting worthless links. Thanks for a great hub. I gave it an up rating.
Thanks for the great information. Your Hub articles have gotten me back on track. I was definitely starting to lose focus on article writing.
Learned a lot from this great article..
Excellent info. Bookmarked it. Thanks for sharing
Hi Richard, nice hub! Just to let you know I signed up to propeller and it wouldn't accept a link to a hubpage - said it was spam. Oh well, I did put a link on m profile page there so hopefully that will help my SERP.
Never knew the profile links were so beneficial. Thanks for the great info!
Definitely a great guide for those who are new to the SEO game. I remember when I was starting out, and these resources were so beneficial, and they certainly still are. You never stop learning, never!
Thanks for giving useful information on article.
Great!!
I am glad I check out your hub when it showed up. I've heard backlink before but not sure where to put them. Great information and will try out those high PR site. Thank you so much for sharing!
Can you get good backlinks from the Ezine Article profile page as well as other article submission sites? Your Hubs have been very helpful. Thanks
good information for free backlinks for the site.
Kindly do some precautions to save the hubpages from spamming.
Do not approve non-HP members which are promoting their sites.
List of sites is good.
Most people don't know how to write a useful comment so they just get deleted. And it's dumb to post links in places that you are not welcome. If you look at the people selling link lists that's how they are making their money. But because the lists get saturated with unintelligent comments the site owners just shut them off. Your article is good, but people would get a lot more out of placing links on sites where they are welcome.
This is a great guide! Something I need to know about backlinking. Thanks!
Thanks for useful info...
Great!!
Excellent introduction Richard and a good list of resources too.
One other way to get targeted backlinks for free which will send some useful traffic along is through twitter - not by adding your link to your profile page which is what most people already know - but by targeted a blog post or site content and linking back to it through a tweet using the same keywords in the tweet - if you use a longtail keyword which nobody else is using this will really help to propel your site in google search - I've used it for a hub I have which went from around 15 to 75 daily visits with this method in less than a week.
hope it helps..
This is an excellent slice of info. Thanks so much for sharing.
I build my back-links using these guys: http://www.freetrafficsystem.com/a.php?p=15975
They have great system and explain in a simple way what and how. It really worked for me and at the time I had no idea what this was about. So, thanks again for the great explanation. Good luck in all you do..
Nice hub! Im just learning about all this stuff, thanks for the info!
Thanks for sharing these sites , Good advice for people who are relatively new to SEO
Thank you. This is very informative information. I am looking forward to using it. Thank you so much.
Thanks for the 8 freebies mate!! Cheers!
I am trying to get my backlink game up now... This surely helps
Hi Richards,
I will certainly live with you my online life.
What a great piece of Info with great simplicity.
Keep this good work continue
regards,
nice post richard and thanks for the list:-)
Thanks - another gap in my knowledge filled in thanks to the expertise of fellow hubbers!
Sir Richard you are a GURU! amazing. I have read a lot of your articles through the backlinks you put. You're very expert on the web, aren't you? I'm a fan of yours.
You have given me a lot of idea now how to optimize earning from my articles. I have headache right now, bcoz I guess, I'm concentrating on how to do them all, oh my...it does take a lot of timeee and patience..oh my...
anyways, I know I can ask you if i need help.
Thanks so very much!
Excellent hub.
Thanks for sharing your list, Richard.
Just registered an account with forum.upi.edu/v3
This is fantastic advice here! I heard of Multiply, its quite similar to Bebo, a lot of people in Asia seem to use it a helluva lot! Yes, once again I am taking notes here! You are a true mine of information! Many thanks! Great suggestions on backlinks!
Great Hub indeed to learn how to make backlinks for our sites! Thanks a lot livewithrichard!
Thank you so much! I have just started learning about all this stuff and your hub was very easy to understand!
Thanks for great info and free list. I learn a lot here. I should have check into the forum earlier.
What a fantastic and informative Hub. I really appreciate all the information!
Richard - I love reading your Hubs you offer such great information. From making money to the new butt firming tennis shoes!! Thank you very much for all your input at Hub pages. Take care and talk with you soon
Great Hub! Very informative. But I have to disagree with you on one point. Nofollow links do carry some leverage if they are coming from VERY HIGH PR Sites such as the Wiki. That just from my experience. Has anyone had the same effect?
But overall, love your hub! :)
Wow! So much information! What a fantastic hub for those like me who are just starting out. It's really good of you to share your tips with us.
Thanks. Would be using the above strategies for sure to get strong internal linking for the mentioned below website -
Hello,
Another way to find valuable back links are to use Alexa.com, where I checked my competitor's back links and found Hubpages to be one of their traffic sources.
I'm preparing for the time when I will lessen the number of hubs I produce and start increasing the backlinks. I know I can do both but heck, I want to do it one at a time or I'll go crazy from doing everything. This hub of yours is certainly up there in the hubs I will read and re-read over and over again until I can get the concept of backlink. Thanks Richard.
Good tips. I might ad that you need RELEVANT links. i.e., if you have a farming website then a link from a music site is going to be heavily discounted by Google while a link from another farming site or a related site like a link from the FDA would give you good "juice".
thanks so much, so so much great information, thanks!
I will be reading your very informative hubs over and over. Will catch on more once I start putting things into practice, I hope. You answered many questions. Also, did not know you can duplicate articles on multiple article directories. So much to learn....my head hurts.
Thank you - you are a great teacher, Richard! Your information is clear without a lot of verbiage as is so common on the internet today - blah, blah, blah - and you get to the end of a 15-page article knowing it could have been said in 3 paragraphs! Not you - your articles are precise and your information very helpful.
I decided to stop writing hubs for a while and concentrate on working on my backlinks. Great hub and quite informative. Does getting links from sites like shetoldme, yousaytoo, etc give backlinks that count?
Thanks for sharing livewithrichard.
Thanks Livewithrichard.
How is Traffic-Bug? I have checked their reviews and testimonial videos on www.traffic-bug-reviews.com
Wow some nice sites you posted with those page ranks, that definitely will help my site out a lot. Thanks for the info Richard. I'm sure more posts like these would be great!
Hi Richard,
Thought I'd drop by to give you a quick update (yes, I bought your bargain basement list of 120 sites and here's a genuine testimonial!)..
I've been applying the steps in the e-book for 2 weeks on 1 site for a client of mine (I'm putting together a social media campaign for her)..
Now, either Google has made an error in PR (do Google make errors?) or..
This brand new site has gone from 0 to PR3 in 2 weeks..
Impressed to say the least..
and by the way, I've only added the first 20 sites - another 100 to go!
Neil
No problem Richard. I should and am thanking you for the advice and information, which is spot on. I must admit the excitement of seeing the PR at 3 so soon did tempt me to start adding more links as fast as I could but as we know now that's just not the answer.
There are a couple of sites on the list that seem to have blocked the ability to edit your profile so I'll collate and drop you I line when I'm done if that helps you to review.
I'm also in the process of putting together a few new hubs on social networking and the one on bookmarking has a great list to take home, so feel free to add to yours when it goes live in the next week or so if you wish.
a test of backlinks -get some great time management tips – click here is this what you're suppose to do, Richard? Did I do it right?
Great information on establishing backlinks! Thanks for sharing. I'm definitely bookmarking this one and rating it up!:)
Thanks!I learned a lot from the above.
Thanks, Richard, for the list and the great tips.
However I'm a SEO provider, I still be week in backlinks tecknics. Thanks for the great help you forwarded; we also are Affordable Social Media Marketing Service providers for online businesses Worldwide. and we are proud to use your advices thanks again.
Great hub! Starting to understand a little more. I'm new to hubpages and trying to figure out linking has been a real pain for me. I just do not understand how to do this. I'm still trying to figure out how to do anchor text links for my hubs. At least I know the difference between a back link and an anchor text link, lol. I just don't know how to apply either yet. The signature link is a big interest also. Your info was very helpful to me in trying to understand all of this linking business. Thank you!
Great Hub, cool technique and yes those websites have high PR. However if you know how to create backlinks you should also know how to make them work for you. If you wanna know more about making your backlinks work, try using a Link wheels. I have it all explain on my blog.
the info is good, but i found the backlink sites very useful, thanks for sharing!
Thanks...
I´ve learnt from many hubbers about SEO and writing online, and I am very thankful to them because they helped me to make progress (slowly step by step but that is the safest way). Another thanks goes to you my dear hubber because this hub is excellent (I´m bookmarking it). I will be coming back convinced that I´ll make even more progress following your guidelines!
Excellent hub. I just made a hub on making a website, and turning it into a web business. Any quality SEO advice I can get is a winner, and this is quality SEO advice. Thank you.
I am seriously considering paying the $15 for 100 good backlinks. I'm 99% sure you will hear back from me on that in the next day or two. Thanx. Are links from the free list above included for the $15? slashdot, digg, propeller, etc.?
nice information I bookmark this hub pages its too damn valuable and also here my collection of free dofollow from pr 5 to 9 its free !!!!
http://hubpages.com/hub/freedofollowpr9
thanks! Richard post another free dofollow pr 9 I'll be your Big Fans lol :-)
wow I'm going to have to read this again tomorrow - I know it's good but my brains gone pop. Thanks so much.
thanks richard i am new to internet amrketting this sort of information is gold.
Hello, Richard, at long last I got to the end but I am not complaining because on the way I learned more and got more information. Now my problem is that I just about got myself sorted out with backlinks. Now, you are talking about anker links. How do I do them? Also, how to I know which are dofollow and which are nofollow? Thank you for giving such great information and at easy written language. You are super.
Hi Richard,.
Actually, I have a lot of questions about link building and it is really confusing me...
I did some link building to my blog but it seems like no effect to search engine.. and guess what, I did it almost three months already, but it still doesn't work..
and I did some link wheel to..
do you have any suggestions about this? what should I do improve my page rank in search engine..??
thank you,
Great Hub by the way.. Thanks for sharing a great content..
Ryan Bourne
You have got the patient of a saint. Thank you for your help. I will try it. By the way, I have been over to 411 and read and try to get the picture. One question - when I posted my link and a publisher wants it, will he pay or contact me? Is that the idea? Thank you again for all your help.
Sorry, Richard, but one more thing I am not clear. You are talking about putting in the keyword. Now which is that? I know it is dumm to you and I heard you scream, which is understandable. Thank you for your help.
A most sincere thank you. You are one of the few who give an answer with information and on a human level, not NASA style. I certainly will pop over there.
Hello, Richard, it is me again. I read your hub about the keyword and got further on that subject. Now I still have problems with when you wrote about the anker text and explained it, a bit above, you stated to type in keyword. Now is that the keyword of my hub and will I type in anyof the keyword or the heading of the hub? Sorry, I hope you have enough headache tablets.
All the information are great!!!Linking is absolutely essential to SEO. You can get only so far with doing all the "right" on-page SEO tasks such as keyword optimizing, meta keywords and descriptions, interlinking your articles, etc. Thanks for all the information sharing
Good article, but I guess it's a race against the clock if you want to get links from Social media sites. More and more they apply nofollow, which makes them pretty useless for linkbuilding.
I appreciate the writeup and the suggested sites. One questions though - how do you determine the PR of a site? Is there a specific site that we can go to that will list a sites ranking?
- Mike @ http://www.getteck.com
thanks for share.. did it give high traffic, really influence?
Thanks for the free tips! Vote up!
Wow thanks, i have been wondering what a backlink was. I already had a few set up and didnt even know it.
Thank you for the list of those pr sites, already used them right now for my new websites to give my backlinks some juice. regards!
I am still trying to figure this stuff out. Your article helps, maybe if I was a little smarter, I would get the whole idea. Maybe you could write an article about how to be smarter? Thanks for your very useful information.
The link codes are amazing! Really cool tips.
Thanks for the list But most of the web 2.0 social media sites like Digg offers a nofollow anchor link, which is no use for us in terms of PR. Digg passes link juice only if the submission hits the front page or either it is listed as a favorite.
Thanks for this list - I found it really helpful. Getting good quality links is a real part of the challenge when it comes to off-page SEO. One of things I've been helping people with is giving them an SEO Report that tells them how many backlinks (and subsequently what Google PR) they need on each keyword to rank high.
When i put a link, it's a link to one of my hubs, so do i write articles to all my different hubs i have to get backlinks to each? Why can't i just get a link to my hubpages profile where they can all check out all my hubs on one page? Great hub
Nice post Richard - very helpful you listed some sites and added the anchor text code examples for the various sites.
Great, Bookmarked for further reference
hey thanks for the article have had a lot of luck w/ you recomendations
Nice job on the article :)
Thank you for sharing and helping others. I'm new; I am just trying to understand backlinks. When I am ready I will try this. Regarding the last portion with the setups, how do I know which type of setup I need? Thanks!
Useful infor. That would be a huge, huge help. Thank you! And i read your hub adout RSS as well. Great?I LOVE all of your hubs.
Sir
At first thanks for this kind of online support. Its really so helpful for a blogger or site maker. Thanks again.
If you get time please visit my basic seo realated site..
Thanks for a great article. I'm just starting out building backlinks, so tips like these are immensely helpful.
THanks for the heads up!
This is a great article.I Would definitely use them in my hubs in the future and and I am your follower now!
A nice article and although aimed primarily at those with little knowledge of backlinks it's always good to read different opinions when you know the basics as you always learn something new, or spot a new backlink opportunity.
My problem with backlinking, and I am sure many will feel the same, is not so much that it takes time but it is such a dull job to do. If only it was more interesting, lol.
As of this moment I'm brighter than I was about backlinks. There is nothing better or more productive a writer can do than show the way to their fellow writers. Thanks!
Thank you for the list. I am only using two of those sites. I look into the other ones.
Good info on backlinks. You have listed a few sites that I'm not familiar with so I'll have to check them out. I appreciate new resources. Thanks.
Very nice hub Richard, thanks for sharing:) Backlinks are definitely a must have in order to rise in the search engines. All relevant links are good, even many nofollow links. We all must remember that although Google counts Dofollow links only - they are not the ONLY search engine in the world. Let's all remember there are countless others that do give nofollow links weight for determining PR. And let's also not forget all the traffic that you can get from targeted visitors following your link whether it's DoFollow or not.
Great hub Richard, thanks for the info. Inbound links are definitely vital for driving traffic and rankings.
Hi Richard, thanks for this post! I was wondering if you personally use Brad's article submitter and if you know if it is MAC compatible? Thanks!
hi a great hub really helpful for me for top google ad sense tips visit http://hubpages.com/hub/Hotgoogleadsense
Thanks for breaking it down into easy to. Understand terms. I have been having problems with this and now hope it will be a little easier.
Thanks
Thanks for the knowledge. all those sites look great!
Thanks for the profile links ;) One thing though, Google Pagerank is a measure of the value of a page, not of an entire site, therefore I don't understand why the PR of a site your a making a profile on is relevant (beyond a little trustrank and domain authority) due to the fact that if it is indexed it will almost certainly be a PR0.
Thanks for the tips! You define these terms and the process so clearly, which is really important for us newbies. I'll definitely be checking out your other hubs!
Very notable information from this hub. A great of such information is what I am in search of. I appretiate your effort and Thank you fro the contribution. Very well suggested hubs too.
This article is very impressive. bookmarked.
Thanks
Gideon Shalwick
this hub post a new idea in my mind to get links from different ways, thanks
- Agraj
Good article!
Wow! Great tips here Richard.
I have been researching about how to build backlinks and where to post them. I have been trying to promote my blog but I don't know how to start. But, your post really could help me a lot.
Thank you so much.
CARLO ADRIAN CANON
hey! Richard i m new to it. i don't no from where to start? what is nofollow and dofollow?
This hub is great. I .learned a lot. Keep it up.
This info was an eye-opener for a real newbie like me. Is there another hub actually showing you exactly how to go onto a site and link to another site. If not thanks for a great hub, Cheers
I am so glad that I ran across this. TY so much for sharing the info!
Just to add a clarification, the hub says that hubpages has a Google PR 6 ranking. That is true of the homepage located at http://hubpages.com but is not true of the thousands of other pages associated with the website. Google ranks pages not websites so each individual page on HubPages has its own pagerank. If you use a tool such as SeoQuake you will see that most of the pages have PR 0. This page has PR 3 so it looks like you must have been busy getting backlinks to the page :-) Cheers
Thanks for the simplified information. I'm gonna get started right away.
Really a fruitful hub for a SEO enthusiast like to learn with
Nice hub. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for including the html codes. Very helpful!
thanks Richard, you really help me a lot...
House to Home
fine hub, thank you.
Great hub. Voted up. Great info for anyone just getting into this. Question: Is it considered poor taste to paste your links in regular comments to blogs, or should you only do it when invited
Great information Richard, Thanks for sharing this. 1 vote up!=)
wow... i read today such a great post about back links... i love this post..
thanks for sharing.
This is a great hub! Very informative and fun to read!
Good information. Thanks for sharing
I disagree with PR nonsense, should always stick to authoritative sites.
This was really useful information. Thanks for sharing.
I would slightly disagree with the fact no follow has no purpose at all, as to my knowledge yahoo and bing still take into consideration no follow links also a web site with 100% do follow links might look slightly unnatural.

This was a definite boost in my HP knowledge! Thanks and goo luck on the 30/30 challenge. I'm doing it too!
