IR Thermometers - Ghost Hunting

Before I discuss how Infrared thermometers are used in paranormal investigations, I’m going to discuss how they work and what their intentional uses are.  First, an IR Thermometer consists of a lens which focuses an infrared (IR) laser onto a specific detector.  It then converts the directed energy into an electrical signal measured in temperature.  Just point the laser at the intended target to get a reading. It is incredibly useful when using other physical probes is impractical, such on moving parts, a target surrounded by an electro-magnetic field, the inside of a live electrical fuse box, or a target which is contained in a vacuum. 

An IR thermometer is great for pinpointing hotspots while performing maintenance on your vehicles and home appliance, which are indications of poor performance.  Also, you can target the areas surrounding doors and windows to find where your home heating and air is escaping.  Of course you can use a thermal imaging camera, but those have costs in the thousands of dollars and an IR thermometer will cost less than a hundred dollars in most cases. 

An IR Thermometer is a good investment for any homeowner for general maintenance uses.  There is of course another use for these thermometers which I’ll discuss below.

Paranormal investigators highly recommend the use of an IR thermometer while on an investigation. A quality infrared thermometer should be a part of any ghost hunting kit, as well as additional 9 volt batteries.

The IR thermometer is a non-contact thermometer. That mean no probe actually has to touch the intended target, just the IR laser. This is important for ghost hunters because it is unlikely that a spirit or apparition will manifest in a form allowing for physical contact. It’s common for investigators to encounter cold spots and this will allow them to focus their investigations on a certain area. It’s also been reported and believed in the paranormal circles that spirits and apparitions can manipulate temperature at will and having a good IR thermometer available will allow the ghost hunter to collect valuable evidence of their investigations.
